Lacing Up for First Marathon: Christine Runs to Honor Her Son’s Memory

Christine Wood, a 53 year old mother of three, is training for her first half marathon as part of the wear blue Gold Star and Survivor Endurance Program at the Cowtown Half Marathon. As she honors Devin’s memory, she is also moving forward with love and strength for her two children who continue to walk this journey beside her. She works full time while also running a micro sourdough bakery, balancing daily responsibilities with the commitment to show up for her family through movement and remembrance.

Before loss reshaped her world, Christine loved her career as a Police Officer and built a life centered on gratitude, family, and paying kindness forward. On 18 March 2018 she lost her son, Navy GMSN Devin Fasulo, to suicide at the age of 22, a moment that changed everything. Today she steps into this endurance journey to honor Devin’s life and carry his memory forward with purpose.

Devin was her person, known for his kindness, humor, and the magical chaos he brought wherever he went. Inspired during his older brother’s Marine Corps graduation, he chose to serve in the Navy and dreamed of one day becoming a Police Officer and working alongside his mom. There was never a dull moment when Devin was around, his sarcasm, storytelling, and big smile leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Nearly eight years later, people still reach out to Christine to share how much Devin meant to them. She remembers his playful spirit, his laughter, and the way he gave the best hugs. Through each training run she carries those memories with her, honoring the bond they shared and the moments that continue to shape her journey forward.

Training for the Cowtown Half Marathon is both a new challenge and a meaningful step. Christine laces up her shoes and prepares to take on something she once thought was impossible, fueled by determination and the reminder that she is capable of hard things. With every mile she honors Devin’s legacy while building strength and connection through community.

Christine shares that she is grateful for the opportunity to do something for her son again and to have his picture present among others being honored. Through the Gold Star and Survivor Endurance Program she moves forward with intention, carrying Devin’s memory, his stories, and his enduring impact one step at a time.
